Shillong and In and Around:

Cherrapunji is one of the most popular tourist locations in North East of India. The town is well known and has guided tours of Tree Root Bridges. It lies to the south of the capital Shillong. A rather scenic 50 kilometer long road connects Cherrapunji with Shillong.

 

The popular waterfalls in the state are the Elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Weinia falls, Bishop Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang Falls and Sweet Falls. The hot springs at Jakrem near Mawsynram are believed to have curative and medicinal properties.

 

Nongkhnum Island located in the West Khasi Hills district is the biggest river island in Meghalaya and the second biggest in Asia. Its 14 kilometres from Nongstoin. The island is formed by the bifurcation of Kynshi River into the Phanliang River and the Namliang River. Adjacent to the sandy beach the Phanliang River forms a very beautiful lake. The river then moves along and before reaching a deep gorge, forms a pretty waterfall about 60 meters high called Shadthum Fall.

 

The Mawlynnong village located near the India-Bangladesh border is known for its cleanliness. The travel magazine Discover India declared the village as the cleanest in Asia in 2003, and the cleanest in India in 2005. Some of the interesting features include the presence of a Living Root Bridges and another natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock.

 

Meghalaya also has many natural and manmade lakes. The Umiam Lake (popularly known as Bara Pani meaning Big water) on the Guwahati-Shillong road is a major tourism attraction for tourist. Meghalaya has several parks; Thangkharang Park, the Eco-park, the Botanical Garden and Lady Hydari Park to name a few. Dawki, which is located at about 96 Kilometres from Shillong is the gateway to Bangladesh and affords a scenic view of some of the tallest mountain ranges in Meghalaya and the Bangladesh border lands.

 

Accessibilty:

By Road: It is well connected by Road  from Guwahati (128 kms).

By Rail: The nearest rail head is Guwahati which is connected by major cities of India.

Airport: The nearest airport is a small airport at Umroi, about 35 km from Shillong. At present, Air India operates with ATR42 type of aircraft on this route. Buses / Taxis are available from Shillong to Umroi and back. Another convenient airport, the Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati (128 km from Shillong) is connected to rest of India with regular flights.

Helicopter Service:Helicopter is available from Guwahati to Tura and Tura to Shillong on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday and from Guwahati to Shillong and Shillong to Guwahati daily except on Sunday.  It takes 20 mins. to reach Shillong from Guwahati and one hour from Guwahati to Tura. This means of transportation is very economical and convenient.

From April to October

Day 01: Guwahati – Shillong (100 KM. / 03 hrs approx)

Meet and assist by our representative at the airport & transfer to Shillong, called 'Scotland of the East' (100 kms 3 hrs). Enroute visit Umium Lake, a majestic placid lake with its surrounding sylvan hills. On arrival at Shillong, check in at your hotel. Overnight stay will be at Shillong.

 

Day 02: Shillong - Cherrapunjee - Shillong

After early breakfast drive to Cherrapunjee (60 kms, 1Ѕhrs), the wettest place in the world. You will see the beautiful waterfall known as Nohkalikai. You can also explore the caves known Mawsmai. Evening return to Shillong, en-route visit Elephanta falls and Shillong peak for some breathtaking views. Overnight stay will be at Shillong.

 

Day 03: Shillong Sightseeing

After breakfast visit Don Bosco Monument, Ward\’s Lake, Botanical Garden and Lady Hydri Park. Evening free for personal activities. Overnight stay will be at Shillong.

 

Day 04: Guwahati Airport / Station

After breakfast check out from the hotel & transfer to Guwahati airport for onward journey.

Meghalaya is an all-year-round tourist destination, where even the monsoon provides the exhilaration and experience of being on the wettest place on the planet.

 

TEMPERATURE

In summer, ranges from 15°C to 25°C; in winter, it is much colder, with temperature ranging between 4°C and 16°C. The hills are also often covered by fog during this season.
