AVOID salads, ice creams, bananas with broken skins and never share water bottles. Don't ignore these rules even in smart, international-style hotels – you can just as easily pick up something there. Take some acidophilus capsules with you: probiotics to keep your tummy bacteria balanced.

DON'T expect drivers to be able to read your written directions.

DON'T take your rubbish with you – leave newspapers, plastic bottles, and so on, on the train; the station kids will collect everything and sell it.

AVOID casting your shadow over local people, especially when they are eating. Use your right hand for picking up food and don't touch other people's food.

DON'T just buy from one souvenir seller if a group of you visits a tourist site. Spread your purchases between all the sellers.

DON'T forget to wear comfortable trainers – you won't be able to sit down anywhere as public seating doesn't exist in India.

TWO TO DO Walk clockwise around temples – and have a wonderful time.
